ABOUT THE TOUR Set in Nungua, a village 8 miles from the capital of Accra, the Wassa Pan Afrika study tour offers 4 weeks of intensive learning experience. These studies give students true immersion into the rich and varied culture of Ghana
DAILY SCHEDULE 4 hours daily practice, Monday through Friday of intensive drumming and dance. All classes are taught by professional drum and dance instructors. You will enjoy the constant attention of these teachers and find it easy to learn and retain the rhythms and the songs. Each student will be taught a range of dance and rhythms from the many ethnic groups that live in Ghana as well as dance and rhythms from some of the neighboring countries of West Africa.
The Wassa Cultural immersion does not end in class. Students are taught the historical and cultural significance of West African performing arts. Program participants are given a rare opportunity to meet some of the musicians and dancers who have played and composed rhythms that have heavily influenced the music being played today. Watch them perform and learn how rhythms evolved, gaining an invaluable understanding of the historic context of the rhythms. In the evening enjoy performances held in various locations around Nungua with participation from nearby communities. The evening entertainment is designed to present an incredible variety of music and dance as well as allow the students to see and hear the rhythms and music they learn in their lessons. At the end of the tour, all students will have the opportunity to perform for the local audience in traditional costumes. Students say this is the most profound and exciting part of the tour.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD Students will stay at a guest house, single or double occupancy. The rooms will be serviced and arrangements can be made for laundry. Three times daily, delicious Ghanaian meals will be prepared by the caterers. Vegetarians and other special diets are accommodated upon request.
DRUMS Drums are provided as part of your tuition. If you prefer or want your own instruments we are able to arrange these items for purchase at a low cost. You are under no obligation to purchase your own drums. Please note, students will be responsible for the freight for any drums purchased and sent back to their own countries.
PROGRAM Included in each class are ten other master musicians and dancers under the guidance of Ghanaian Master Dancer/Drummer, Nana Kwasi Anim. They will provide unique inspiration for you during the lessons. Students may be placed into smaller groups depending on ability and experience. Each group will have 2-4 teachers to work with them including private lessons by arrangement. Lessons can also be taken in other instruments like Gile (a traditional wooden xylophone), Moro and Gonje (traditional stringed instruments), Ashiwa (a thumb piano) and Atenteben (a bamboo flute). We can also offer other programs of study in some more contemporary styles of Ghanaian music.
*Arrangements can also be made for program participants who wish to interact with local school children, teaching English, etc.
